If you have been holding off on an R-410A condenser because you were told the install window closes, here is the short version: it doesn't. An EPA final rule taking effect July 27, 2026 removes the January 1, 2026 installation deadline for R-410A residential and light-commercial air conditioning and heat pump equipment, as long as that equipment was manufactured or imported before January 1, 2025. Pre-2025 stock can be installed until existing supplies run out.
That is a meaningful change for anyone quoting replacement work this season. It is also widely misunderstood, because three different restrictions get collapsed into the phrase "the R-410A phase-out." Below is what actually changed, the two exceptions that will bite you if you miss them, and how to size and match a system from remaining inventory.
The three restrictions people keep confusing
Under the AIM Act's technology transitions rule, the EPA regulated these separately. Keeping them straight is most of the job.
Manufacturing. As of January 1, 2025, manufacturers can no longer produce or import new residential and light-commercial AC and heat pump systems that use refrigerants above 700 GWP. R-410A sits around 2,088 GWP, so R-410A systems stopped coming off the line. This part has not changed and is not coming back.
Installation. The original rule paired that with a January 1, 2026 deadline to install remaining R-410A inventory. That deadline is what the EPA has now removed. Under the final rule effective July 27, 2026, pre-2025 R-410A equipment may be installed until existing supplies are depleted — no calendar cutoff.
Service. Servicing existing R-410A systems was never restricted. R-410A refrigerant remains legal to purchase and charge into existing equipment indefinitely. Every R-410A system already in the field stays serviceable.
So an R-410A condensing unit built in 2024, sitting in a warehouse today, is legal to sell, legal to install, and legal to service. It carries full manufacturer warranty. What it does not have is a production line behind it.
Two exceptions that will catch you
New York State. The federal change does not reach New York. State regulation Part 494 keeps the January 1, 2026 installation deadline in force as a backstop. If you install in New York, the federal relief does not apply to you. Do not let a supplier tell you otherwise.
Products that don't require field assembly. Window air conditioners, PTACs and similar self-contained units follow a different schedule — a final date of sale set at three years after their manufacture compliance date, and no later than January 1, 2028. The "install until supplies are depleted" relief is aimed at field-assembled split systems, not at everything with R-410A in it.
Beyond those, refrigerant licensing and state or local mechanical code still govern the install. Confirm your jurisdiction before you order. This article is not legal advice.
Should you buy R-410A now, or move to R-454B?
Both are defensible. The honest answer depends on the job.
Buy R-410A when you are replacing a failed outdoor unit on an existing R-410A system and the indoor coil is healthy. You keep the matched pair, you avoid replacing the coil and possibly the line set, and the labor is a fraction of a full system changeout. You are also buying at the bottom of a depleting market — distributors are clearing this inventory, and the equipment carries normal warranty coverage.
Go R-454B when you are doing a full system replacement anyway, when the indoor coil is at end of life, or when the customer intends to hold the property long-term. The forward risk on R-410A is not legality — it is refrigerant price. As production winds down, industry groups including ACCA have warned that removing the install deadline extends demand for R-410A service refrigerant against a shrinking allocation. Expect the cost of a top-off in 2030 to look nothing like it does today. That is a real number to put in front of a customer deciding between the two.
What you cannot do is split the difference. R-454B is not a drop-in for R-410A. It is an A2L (mildly flammable) refrigerant rather than A1, it runs at different operating pressures, and R-454B equipment ships with leak detection and sealed electrical components that R-410A units simply do not have. The indoor coil and outdoor unit are engineered and certified as a matched pair. Charging R-454B into an R-410A system voids the warranty outright and violates EPA Section 608, which prohibits knowingly charging equipment with the wrong refrigerant. Mechanically, the TXV metering for R-454B will starve an evaporator sized for R-410A: the unit runs, it doesn't cool, and you cook the compressor while you troubleshoot it.
Sizing: tonnage, and the matched-system rule
Most of what people search for is a tonnage and a refrigerant — "3 ton 410a condenser," "2.5 ton 410a condenser," "4 ton evaporator coil 410a." That is the right instinct, and it is also where replacements go wrong.
Nominal tonnage tells you rated cooling capacity: one ton equals 12,000 BTU/h, so a 3-ton unit is nominally 36,000 BTU/h. But a condensing unit is only rated as a system. The AHRI-certified capacity and SEER2 rating apply to a specific outdoor unit paired with a specific indoor coil or air handler. Swap in a mismatched coil and the published SEER2 is fiction, the metering device is wrong, and the equipment warranty is exposed.
Practically, that means when you replace an R-410A condenser:
- Match the tonnage to the existing, correctly-sized indoor coil — not to the old outdoor nameplate, if the system was oversized to begin with.
- Verify the coil is rated for R-410A and for the tonnage you are installing.
- Check line set diameter and length against the manufacturer's charge tables. A long line set changes the charge, not just the performance.
- Confirm the electrical — voltage, phase and MCA. Residential units are typically 208/230V single phase, 60 Hz; commercial condensers frequently come in three-phase at 208/230V or 460V, and they are not interchangeable.
If the indoor coil is R-22 vintage, or you cannot confirm its rating, replace it. A new R-410A evaporator coil or air handler is cheap next to a compressor failure and a warranty denial.

Warranty, freight and lead time
Pre-2025 R-410A equipment carries the manufacturer's standard warranty. Registration requirements and coverage terms are unchanged by the refrigerant rule — but nearly every manufacturer conditions warranty coverage on installation and startup by a qualified professional. These are not DIY units, and we sell them to the trade on that basis.
Condensing units ship LTL freight on a pallet, typically 5–7 business days to the contiguous 48, at a flat freight rate. Inspect the crate before you sign. Freight damage noted at delivery is a claim; freight damage discovered in the shop is an argument.
