Can the SD3 be mounted vertically?
Yes. Watts states it can be installed horizontally or vertically, with flow up or down, as long as the arrow on the valve body points in the direction of flow. Keep the strainer and valve accessible for service.
What does discharge from the vent port mean?
The atmospheric port is there to show that the second check has failed or fouled. Watts says to connect a vent discharge line and run it to a safe place of disposal with adequate ventilation, and it requires an annual inspection of the strainer and the backflow preventer.
Can I run copper tubing after this valve?
Not on a carbonated system. Watts states that copper tubing shall not be used on the downstream side of the backflow preventer in carbonated systems; it allows copper only on non-carbonated applications such as coffee makers.
