Keg coupler systems: how to find the right one
A keg coupler taps your keg and connects the gas and beer lines, but couplers are not universal — the coupler has to match the keg's valve. Six systems cover almost every keg sold in the U.S.: D (American Sankey), S (European Sankey), A (German slider), G (Grundy), M, and U (UEC / Guinness), plus one-way KeyKeg couplers. To pick the right one, match the system to the beer brand or check the keg's valve. This guide covers U.S.-distributed kegs — a brand's system can change by region or importer, so confirm with your distributor when in doubt.
D System (American Sankey)
The most common coupler in the U.S. The D system taps all the major domestic breweries — Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser, Michelob), Miller, Molson-Coors, Yuengling — and the large majority of US craft breweries. If you're tapping a US-made keg, it's almost always a D.
S System (European Sankey)
Many European imports use the S system, distinguished by a longer, narrower probe than the D. It taps brands such as Heineken, Beck's, Amstel Light, and Pilsner Urquell. It resembles the D but is not interchangeable.
A System (German Slider)
Called the German Slider because it slides onto the valve face. The A system taps many German and Belgian brands such as Paulaner, Spaten, Warsteiner, and Hoegaarden.
G System (Grundy)
Named after its English developer, Grundy. The G system taps English ales and a few specialty kegs — Bass, Boddington's, Caffrey's, and Anchor Steam (50-liter kegs). Don't confuse it with the German A slider; the valve faces differ.
U System (UEC) - Guinness & nitro stouts
Named for the English manufacturer UEC. The U system taps Guinness and Harp, and is what you need for UK/Irish nitro stouts (paired with nitrogen or a beer-gas blend for the cascading pour).
M System & KeyKeg
The M system shares the German-slider body but uses a unique probe; it taps brands such as Schneider, Aventinus, and Einbecker. KeyKeg couplers are different again — they tap the one-way, recyclable KeyKeg format used by many import and craft brewers. Match the coupler to the keg format, not just the brand.

How does a keg coupler work?
A keg coupler connects to the keg's valve and links your gas and beer lines. Pressurized gas (CO2 or nitrogen) flows in through the coupler to push beer up the beer line and out the faucet. Engaging the coupler's lever opens the keg's valve.
How do I know which keg coupler I need?
Match the coupler to the keg's valve system.
